Norman Manea, Francis Flournoy Professor of European Culture and writer in residence at Bard, is a Romanian writer who came to United States in 1988.

He is the author of many fiction and nonfiction books, translated into 15 languages, (the latest translated into English is The Hooligan's Return, FSG, 2003).

Manea has received several important cultural and literary prizes, among them the MacArthur Award (US, 1992), the international literary Nonino Prize (Italy, 2002), and Le Prix Medicis Etranger (France, 2006).

Norman Manea is a member of the Berlin Academy of Art.
